The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international organization established in January 1995 as the successor to the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) upon successful conclusion of the Uruguay Round negotiations. The resulting WTO Agreements (the Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization and its annexes) established various international rules relating to trade. The WTO plays a central role in the multilateral trading system by implementing and operating these agreements while addressing new trade issues. The WTO goes beyond trade in goods, which was the main focus of the GATT, to also cover the fields of trade in services and trade-related intellectual property. The organization also features a dispute settlement system.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is a permanent intergovernmental body established by the United Nations General Assembly after its first conference held in Geneva in 1964. The core idea behind UNCTAD is that world peace and prosperity cannot be achieved unless the economic difficulties of developing countries are resolved through international cooperation. UNCTAD sets out to maximize the trade, investment, and development opportunities of developing countries, support them in facing the challenges of globalization, and integrate them into the global economy on an equal footing.
The International Trade Center (ITC) is an international organization with a joint mandate from the WTO and the United Nations. ITC was established in 1964 for the purpose of providing developing countries with technical assistance for export promotion measures. ITC focuses on promoting sustainable and self-reliant development through the economic empowerment of developing countries, and provides technical cooperation to strengthen the competitiveness of the private sector, especially small and medium enterprises, in developing countries.
The members of our Mission’s Economics Section are working to maintain and strengthen the multilateral trading system and promote economic development through trade by engaging in discussions with the WTO, UNCTAD, ITC, and representatives of their member countries and regions.
