Global environmental problems such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution from waste and chemical substances pose a grave threat to the survival of humankind. We urgently need more concerted efforts by the international community to address these problems. Japan recognizes that preserving the global environment is our responsibility to future generations. We therefore place importance on addressing these issues through Japanese diplomacy. In addition, international cooperation is essential to prevent and mitigate disasters by monitoring and predicting weather patterns and other natural phenomena while considering the effects of climate change. This cooperation is also crucial to providing and sharing accurate information for tackling climate change.

Geneva and its suburbs are home to many international organizations specialized in addressing issues related to meteorology, climate change, and the global environment, and many related meetings are held in the city. These organizations include:

  • The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) whose main activities are coordination, unification, and improvement of global meteorological operations together with promotion of effective exchange of information between countries on meteorology and climate and other related issues
  • The Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), established for the purpose of conducting a comprehensive assessment of climate change from the scientific, technical, and socioeconomic perspectives
  • The secretariats of the conventions for the protection of wildlife—the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
  • The secretariats of the conventions for the treatment of waste and chemical substances—the Basel Convention, the Rotterdam Convention, the Stockholm Convention, and the Minamata Convention on Mercury
  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which is a global environmental union of governments and civil society organizations working to promote nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources

Our Mission works together with the above organizations, among others, to address international challenges in the areas of meteorology, climate change, and the global environment.
