By theme - Disaster Risk Reduction

2026/3/10
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) refers to various actions and initiatives designed to prevent disasters before they happen and to reduce the risk associated with disasters when they do occur. There are two main types of disasters: natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, and droughts; and man-made disasters such as fires, explosions, infectious diseases, and accidents involving radioactive contamination.

While applying the lessons learned from past disasters such as the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is taking the lead in building disaster-resilient societies and mainstreaming DRR in development and international cooperation. Furthermore, bearing in mind the importance of promoting DRR internationally through collaboration with dedicated international organizations, our Mission works closely with the Geneva-headquartered United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
