The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Thank you, Mr. President.
Mr. High Commissioner, we commend your dedicated work.
Under the basic principle of “dialogue and cooperation,” Japan supports each country’s voluntary efforts to advance human rights.
In this connection, we take note of the High Commissioner’s report on Sri Lanka and welcome Sri Lanka’s efforts. Japan strongly hopes that Sri Lanka will continue its efforts, notably those to promote accountability and national reconciliation through domestic mechanisms.
At the same time, Japan remains deeply concerned by the serious human rights and humanitarian situations worldwide.
In particular, Japan is gravely concerned by the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, including the ongoing settlement activities and escalating settler violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, as well as the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Regarding Syria, we welcome the progress to date, including steps toward developing a transitional justice law, while underscoring the urgent need to advance accountability and protect detainees’ rights.
All parties to a conflict must fully respect international human rights and humanitarian law and protect civilians. Japan will continue to support international efforts for improvement of the humanitarian situation and for peace and stability in the Middle East.
Japan reaffirms its commitment to cooperate closely with OHCHR in promoting and protecting human rights.
