Thank you, Madam Vice-President.
Japan is pleased to join in commemorating the International Day of Women in Diplomacy and thanks the distinguished panelists for their valuable contributions.
The right to work is vital to women’s empowerment and leadership. Yet women around the world continue to face structural barriers, including unequal care responsibilities, gender stereotypes, violence and harassment, and obstacles to career advancement. These challenges not only undermine women’s economic rights but also limit their opportunities to participate in leadership and decision-making.
While no country has yet achieved full gender equality, Japan remains committed to advancing women’s empowerment and increasing women’s participation in leadership across all sectors of society, including through the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda (WPS agenda).
In partnership with UN Women, Japan has been supporting efforts to strengthen the resilience and economic empowerment of women in vulnerable situations, including by promoting women’s participation in the labor market and supporting women leaders in their communities.
Japan believes that diverse and inclusive leadership contributes to stronger institutions and more effective governance, which fosters an environment in which everyone can fully enjoy their human rights. We therefore support continued efforts to eliminate discrimination, promote equal opportunities, and create workplaces where women can lead.
In closing, Japan would be interested in hearing from the panelists about the most effective measures for supporting women’s advancement into senior leadership and diplomatic positions.
I thank you.
