The 62nd Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 2: Enhanced interactive dialogue on the oral update of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan
Statement by Ms. SAKURAI Minami, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
15 June 2026

Thank you, Mr. President. We thank the Fact-Finding Mission for their oral updates and their work.

Japan remains deeply concerned by the catastrophic human rights and humanitarian situation in Sudan, where an estimated 30 million people, representing more than half of Sudan’s population, require urgent assistance. We are particularly alarmed by the reports of large numbers of casualties, widespread famine and severe malnutrition, gender-based violence, and other grave human rights violations that have already occurred this year.

Japan reiterates its call on all parties to the conflict to enact an immediate ceasefire and to respect human rights, and hopes that meaningful progress will be achieved in the transition to civilian rule. Japan emphasizes the importance of drawing the international community’s attention to the unprecedented humanitarian and human rights crisis in Sudan, and of further expanding collective support efforts to mitigate its impact on civilians.

Japan remains committed to standing with Sudan and the Sudanese people, and at the same time to continuing to contribute to the aforementioned collective efforts toward improvement of the situation in Sudan.

I thank you.
