Statement by Ms. SAKURAI Minami, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
5 May 2026
Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
Japan warmly welcomes the delegation of Mozambique to this session.
Japan highly appreciates the positive steps taken by Mozambique to promote women’s representation in decision-making positions in the political sphere, which will help to create a more favorable environment for women’s participation in elections and public life.
In a spirit of constructive dialogue, Japan recommends that Mozambique:
- take all necessary legal and policy measures to protect and promote freedom of expression, including through ensuring free and independent media and safeguarding civic space;
- strengthen social protection measures for persons affected by leprosy and their family members, particularly those in remote communities, to ensure their equal access to social protection without discrimination; and
- continue to strengthen legal measures aimed at eliminating all forms of discrimination against women, including gender-based violence and the practice of forced and early marriage.
We wish the delegation of Mozambique every success in the review.
I thank you.
