Item 10: General debate
Statement by Mr. TAKEUCHI Yasuaki, Second Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
27 March 2026
Thank you, Madam Vice-President.
We appreciate the High Commissioner’s annual presentation on technical cooperation and capacity-building, as well as the oral update on the human rights situation in Georgia.
We attach great importance to the promotion and protection of human rights. In this regard, we have strengthened bilateral dialogue and cooperation to support the voluntary efforts of other countries to ameliorate their human rights situation, while continuing to address serious human rights situations.
Please let me introduce our work with Cambodia as an example of this approach. We have engaged in bilateral human rights dialogue with Cambodia and have submitted a series of resolutions on the situation in the country. We appreciate OHCHR’s continued technical assistance in Cambodia, which helps the Government to make progress in implementing its international human rights obligations and the recommendations of international human rights mechanisms, and is vital for capacity-building and institutional strengthening.
We remain committed to supporting OHCHR’s technical cooperation worldwide. To that end, we have voluntarily contributed approximately USD 3.6 million to OHCHR projects in the DRC, Palestine, Syria, Moldova, and Thailand, reflecting our commitment to practical, on-the-ground support.
As a member of this Council, Japan will continue to cooperate closely with OHCHR to promote and protect human rights, including through effective technical assistance and capacity-building.
I thank you.
