Item 4: Joint interactive dialogue
with the Special Rapporteur on the Islamic Republic of Iran
and the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran
Statement by Mr. ISHII Yoshizane, Minister
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
16 March 2026
Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
I thank the Special Rapporteur and the FFM for their continued efforts to address the situation.
The peace and stability of the Middle East is of utmost importance to Japan.
As a country that respects fundamental values and principles such as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, Japan will continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts, in coordination with the international community, to bring about an early de-escalation of the situation in [the Islamic Republic of] Iran.
Japan opposes any use of force against peaceful protests and attacks on civic space in the country. We urge Iran to uphold the human rights of all individuals, in particular the right to freedom of expression, including freedom to seek, receive and impart information, and the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, without fear of reprisal or intimidation.
Japan remains open to dialogue with Iran to further exchange views on efforts to improve its human rights situation, including through a bilateral human rights dialogue.
I thank you.
