and other minorities in Myanmar
Statement by Mr. KODO Takeshi, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
27 February 2026

 Thank you, Madam Vice-President.

Thank you, Assistant Secretary-General, for your comprehensive update.

The continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Myanmar is a matter of grave concern.

In particular, indiscriminate acts of violence, including airstrikes targeting civilians and civilian facilities, are unacceptable. Japan calls upon all parties to the conflict to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

Japan reiterates its calls on the Myanmar military to take concrete actions to (1) immediately stop the violence, (2) release those detained, and (3) swiftly restore Myanmar’s democratic political system.

Japan will continue to actively provide humanitarian assistance as well as support aimed at improving people’s livelihoods, including for persons with disabilities.

Furthermore, Japan will continue to stand with the people of Myanmar and actively engage in dialogue with various stakeholders, while strengthening efforts to work toward improving the situation in close collaboration with the international community, including ASEAN.

 I thank you.
