Statement by Ambassador OIKE Atsuyuki
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Thank you, Madam Vice-President.
We would like to thank the Assistant Secretary-General for her oral update on the dire human rights situation in Ukraine.
We also appreciate the Secretary-General’s interim report on the human rights situation in Crimea.
More than three years have passed since Russia launched its aggression against Ukraine, which, we reiterate, is a clear violation of international law and shakes the very foundation of the international order.
If such violations were tolerated, it would set a dangerous precedent.
We once again condemn in the strongest terms the actions of the Russian forces, which have led to large numbers of civilian casualties.
We support the monitoring and technical assistance by OHCHR, and Ukraine’s efforts to uphold human rights in cooperation with international mechanisms.
We also express our respect for the Ukrainian people, who have demonstrated immense bravery in standing up against Russia’s aggression day after day.
Japan will continue to stand firmly with Ukraine and the international community until a just and lasting peace is achieved in Ukraine.
I thank you.
