Item 4: Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on
the situation of human rights in Myanmar
Statement by Ms. ASANO Yuko, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
19 March 2025
Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
Thank you, Mr. Special Rapporteur, for your insightful briefing.
Japan shares the observation made by the Special Rapporteur that Myanmar’s military is becoming an even greater threat to civilians.
The lives of Myanmar’s citizens continue to be significantly affected, including by air strikes and other acts of violence that have resulted in the deaths and wounding of many innocent civilians, by attacks on civilian infrastructure, and by arbitrary detention.
The conscription by the Myanmar military may throw the country into even greater turmoil.
Japan reiterates its call on the Myanmar military to take concrete actions to immediately stop the violence, release those who are arbitrarily detained, and swiftly restore Myanmar’s democratic political system.
With more than three million forcibly displaced civilians, humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar remains an urgent priority. In response to the increase in humanitarian assistance needs, Japan is actively providing additional humanitarian assistance and strongly calls on the Myanmar military to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access.
We will continue to make every effort to improve the situation in Myanmar in a manner that reflects the will of the people of Myanmar.
I thank you.
