Item 2: Interactive dialogue on the High Commissioner Oral Update on Myanmar

Thank you, Mr. President.
Thank you, High Commissioner, for your oral update on the human rights situation in Myanmar.
The continuing deterioration of the human rights situation in Myanmar is a matter of serious concern, and the lack of progress over the past four years since the coup is deplorable.
Japan strongly condemns the Myanmar military for its ongoing failure to take concrete actions to resolve the situation by peaceful means. This is happening even as the lives of Myanmar’s citizens continue to be significantly affected.
We urge the Myanmar military to refrain from violence and urge all stakeholders to work together toward a peaceful resolution of the situation through dialogue in order to avoid further casualties and division among the people of Myanmar. Japan stands ready to support the realization of such dialogue.
We will continue to work closely with the international community, including ASEAN, and make every effort to improve the situation in Myanmar in a manner that reflects the will of the people of Myanmar.
I thank you.
