第58回人権理事会 議題2 南スーダン人権委員会との強化されたインタラクティブ・ダイアローグにおける竹内康朗専門調査員ステートメント(2025年2月28日)

令和7年2月28日
The 58th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 2: Enhanced interactive dialogue on
report of Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan
Statement by Mr. TAKEUCHI Yasuaki, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
28 February 2025

 Thank you, Mr. Vice-President,

Japan expresses its appreciation for the Commission’s report. We would also like to thank the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for its ongoing commitment to protecting civilians in South Sudan.

Japan welcomes South Sudan’s continued engagement with the Commission, including its cooperation for the most recent visit to the country by the independent experts.

However, Japan remains concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in South Sudan, which has been affected by the influx of refugees and returnees from Sudan. Japan is also concerned about the reports of violence and gross human rights violations, particularly against women and children.

Japan highlights the importance of conducting free, fair, credible and peaceful elections scheduled for December 2026 without further delay. Throughout this process, it is essential to ensure women’s full, equal, meaningful and safe participation. Such participation is fundamental to improving the human rights situation of women and girls toward achieving gender equality and lasting peace.

Japan remains committed to continuing to work with South Sudan and the international community to protect and promote human rights in South Sudan.

 I thank you.
