UPR of Fiji
Statement by Ms. ASANO Yuko, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
22 January 2025

   Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Japan warmly welcomes the delegation of the Republic of Fiji.

Japan appreciates the positive steps taken by Fiji based on the recommendations made during the previous review cycle, including the repeal of the Media Industry Development Act of 2010, which led to the expansion of press freedom in the country, as well as the implementation of the enhanced public service delivery platform, the REACH program, to improve access to social, economic, and legal services, especially those in rural areas.

We also commend the development of the National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls (2023–28), the first such plan among the Pacific Island countries.

In the spirit of constructive dialogue, Japan recommends that Fiji:
  1. further strengthen initiatives and measures to ensure the rights of women and girls; and
  2. continue to engage with and improve cooperation with United Nations human rights mechanisms, including the treaty bodies.
We wish the delegation of Fiji every success in the review.

   I thank you.
