UPR of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
Statement by Mr. TAKEUCHI Yasuaki, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
12 November 2024

   Thank you, Madam Vice-President.

   Japan recognizes the positive steps taken by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia since the previous review cycle, such as the adoption of the Transitional Justice Policy and of a roadmap.

   While Japan notes the efforts of the Ethiopian Government, Japan also encourages the government to make further efforts to improve Ethiopia’s human rights situation, which has been affected by the widespread conflicts.

   In the spirit of constructive dialogue, Japan recommends that Ethiopia:

  1) further strengthen efforts to promote the rights of women and girls, including through steady implementation of domestic legislation and strategies;

  2) undertake additional efforts to help improve the livelihood of displaced persons, including through facilitating their access to education;

  3) enhance initiatives to guarantee the fundamental freedoms and rights enshrined in the ICCPR (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights); and

      4) expedite the process of acceding to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

   We wish the delegation of Ethiopia every success in the review.

   I thank you.
