The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
11 November 2024
Thank you, Madam Vice-President.
Japan takes note of the progress made by the Republic of Equatorial Guinea since the previous review cycle, including its efforts to empower women and strengthen inclusion of persons with disabilities in line with its national plans.
However, we remain concerned about reports of restrictions on the enjoyment of human rights, such as those concerning restriction of the rights of persons associated with civil society and journalists, including those enshrined in treaties ratified by the country concerned.
Therefore, in the spirit of constructive dialogue, Japan recommends that Equatorial Guinea:
1) implement effective measures to protect and promote the fundamental freedoms and rights enshrined in the ICCPR, including freedom of expression and freedom of movement, which are an integral part of a democratic society;
2) take additional steps to raise awareness of, and combat, gender stereotypes, and to enhance women’s meaningful participation in decision making processes, in consultation with civil society; and
3) take further action to ensure accessibility and a non-discriminatory environment in education, especially for children with disabilities and girl victims of child marriage and early pregnancy.
We wish the delegation of Equatorial Guinea every success in the review.
I thank you.
