Item 10: Interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner on the oral update on Ukraine
Statement by Mr. SHIMIZU Yohei, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
8 October 2024
Thank you, Mr. Vice President.
Japan would like to thank the High Commissioner for his oral update on the human rights situation in Ukraine.
We remain deeply concerned over the humanitarian and human rights situations in Ukraine. More than two and a half years have passed since Russia launched its aggression against Ukraine, which, we reiterate, is a clear violation of international law and shakes the very foundation of the international order.
Japan once again condemns in the strongest terms the actions of the Russian forces, which have led to a large number of civilian casualties in Ukraine. Indiscriminate attacks against civilians and civilian objects are in violation of international law and can never be justified.
Japan expresses its utmost respect for the courage and perseverance of the people of Ukraine, who have been standing up in defense for the freedom and independence of their country for over two and a half years.
Japan, in continued close coordination with the international community, strongly supports the Government of Ukraine and its people with a view to stopping Russia’s aggression and achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.
I thank you.
