Item 3: Interactive dialogue with the Working Group on enforced or involuntary disappearances
Statement by Mr. SHIMIZU Yohei, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
17 September 2024
Thank you, Mr. Vice President.
Enforced disappearance occurs all around the world and it is a universal and grave human rights issue. Japan expresses its sincere respect to the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) for playing a crucial role in efforts to resolve this issue.
The abduction of Japanese nationals by North Korea is a serious issue, as it affects our national sovereignty and the lives and safety of our people. The families of the victims of the abductions are now well advanced in age, and a growing number of the family members have already passed away without being able to reunite with the victims. This is a time-sensitive humanitarian issue that cannot be ignored. When we consider the tremendous suffering that the victims and their families have endured over the years, there is no time to waste. Japan strongly urges North Korea to realize the immediate return of all abductees.
The Government of Japan is determined to take all possible measures toward resolving enforced disappearance, including the abductions of Japanese nationals, and continues to maintain close communication with the WGEID. We once again ask for the understanding and cooperation of the international community regarding this matter.
I thank you.
