令和6年9月11日
The 57th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 2: Interactive dialogue on OHCHR report on Sri Lanka

Statement by Ambassador HONSEI Kozo
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
9 September 2024

  Thank you.

Japan takes note of the High Commissioner’s report and appreciates Sri Lanka’s engagement in its preparation.

Japan welcomes the steps taken by Sri Lanka toward national reconciliation, and development of an open domestic mechanism for the establishment of the Commission for Truth, Unity and Reconciliation. Japan also recognizes the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka to implement social protection measures to compensate for the cumulative impacts of the economic crisis and associated austerity measures that have affected socio-economically vulnerable communities. However, there still remain issues to be addressed.

Japan encourages the Government of Sri Lanka, which is primarily responsible for ensuring the human rights of individuals living in the country, to take further actions and provide remedies to achieve a meaningful reconciliation and a better human rights situation on the ground through dialogue with all domestic and international stakeholders.

It is important for Sri Lanka itself to continue to improve its human rights situation in a concrete and tangible manner and to further promote confidence-building measures that contribute to national reconciliation.

Japan will continue to support Sri Lanka’s efforts in this regard.

  I thank you.
