令和6年9月11日
The 57th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 2: Interactive dialogue on report of Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar

Statement by Ambassador HONSEI Kozo
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
9 September 2024

Thank you, Chair, and Mr. Koumjian for your briefing.

Japan expresses serious concern about the continuing deterioration of the human rights situation in Myanmar. We deplore the human rights violations and atrocities committed by the Myanmar military against civilians, including arbitrary detention, forced conscription, and aerial attacks on schools, religious buildings and hospitals.

Japan once again strongly urges the Myanmar military to work toward the peaceful resolution of the situation by taking concrete actions to: (1) immediately stop the violence; (2) release those detained; and (3) swiftly restore Myanmar’s democratic political system and implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus.

At the same time, Japan earnestly hopes that all relevant stakeholders will make maximum efforts to resolve the situation through dialogue while respecting the will of the Myanmar people. Japan will continue to support such efforts.

  I thank you.
