Item 10: ID on oral presentation of HC on Ukraine (HRC res. 53/30) and

Statement by Ambassador HONSEI Kozo
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
9 July 2024

Thank you, Mr. Vice President.
Japan would like to thank the High Commissioner for his oral update. We also appreciate the Secretary-General’s interim report on the human rights situation in Crimea.
We remain deeply concerned over the humanitarian and human rights situation in Ukraine. In this regard, Japan fully supports the critical work of the HRMMU and OHCHR to monitor, report, and advocate on the human rights situation in the country.
Japan once again condemns in the strongest terms Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which constitutes a serious violation of international law, including the Charter of the United Nations. We reiterate our call on Russia to fulfill its obligations under international law, including international human rights law and humanitarian law.
Russia’s aggression against the sovereign state of Ukraine is an outrageous act that has shaken the very foundations of the international order. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of any nation, large or small, must be respected. Japan strongly opposes unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion, anywhere in the world.
Japan will continue to stand with Ukraine and the people of Ukraine.
I thank you.
