Item 4: ID on the progress oral report of Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar
Statement of Japan
ASANO Yuko, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
4 July 2024
Thank you, Madame Vice-President, and Mr. Special Rapporteur for your insightful briefing.
Japan reiterates its serious concern about the continuing deterioration of the human rights situation in Myanmar and deplores the lack of concrete progress.
Japan also shares the observation made by the Special Rapporteur that Myanmar’s military is becoming an even greater threat to civilians. Japan once again strongly urges the Myanmar military to immediately cease its air strikes and other acts of violence, as well as to take concrete steps toward a peaceful resolution. In this regard, Japan takes note of the Special Rapporteur’s report on the procurement of weapons by the Myanmar military. Japan shares its concern over such weapons being used against civilians, and would like to work together with the international community to address this issue.
At the same time, humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar remains an urgent priority. In response to the further increase in humanitarian assistance needs, Japan decided, in March, to provide additional humanitarian assistance, which has now reached a cumulative total of US$150 million.
While listening carefully to the voices of the people of Myanmar, Japan will continue to work closely with the international community, including ASEAN, and to make every effort to improve the situation in Myanmar.
I thank you.
