(FULL VERSION)
Thank you, Mr. President.
Japan appreciates the report presented by the new Special Rapporteur, Ms. Morgera, and takes due note of it.
As a disaster-prone country that regularly experiences extreme weather events, such as typhoons and heatwaves, Japan shares the concern that the climate crisis poses serious risks to the enjoyment of human rights.
For its part, Japan has not only set the ambitious target of reducing its GHG emissions but has also been contributing to the relevant funds for adaptation and loss and damage. We believe that the appropriate implementation of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement under the global target of 1.5 degrees Celsius is an essential element in realizing the enjoyment of human rights.
At the same time, we believe that the entire international community must holistically address this unprecedented crisis triggered by multi-hazards. We would like to highlight the importance of deepening technical discussions at respective dedicated forums on a wide range of technical issues related to climate change, including climate-related hazards and extreme weather events. It is essential that we draw on the expertise of the agencies dealing with these issues and identify the specific role each forum has to play in addressing this global crisis.
Japan continues to work closely with the international community, including a wide range of the relevant specialized agencies, to holistically counter the adverse impacts of climate change on the enjoyment of human rights.
Thank you.
