Thank you, Mr. President and Madam Special Rapporteur.
Japan welcomes the appointment of Dr. Miranda-Galarza as Special Rapporteur.
Madam Special Rapporteur, Japan appreciates your report on progress in the elimination of discrimination against people affected by Hansen’s disease, and issues and areas that you will emphasize during your mandate.
Japan places importance on treating Hansen’s disease as a human rights issue. Since 2008, Japan has been submitting resolutions aimed at realizing a society in which persons affected by the disease and their family members will be treated with dignity and can enjoy their human rights.
Regarding our national efforts, Japan recently conducted a first national survey on attitudes toward Hansen’s disease-related discrimination. A revised law has also been passed to extend the deadline for compensation claims by families of former patients who suffered discrimination due to isolation policies implemented in the past.
Japan hopes that the Special Rapporteur will be able to fulfill her mandate within the designated period, and requests that other States extend the necessary support to facilitate her work.
I thank you.
