Item 2: Interactive Dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied
Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel
Statement by Ambassador HONSEI Kozo

Thank you, Mr. President.
Japan takes note of the report prepared by the Commission of Inquiry.
Japan expresses its grave concern about the current devastating humanitarian situation surrounding Israel and Palestine. We have seen a large number of civilian casualties. Japan, having unequivocally condemned terror attacks by Hamas and others, urges all parties to abide by international law, including international humanitarian and human rights law, and to act in good faith based on relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, including the recently adopted Resolution 2735, in order to prevent further civilian casualties.
In this connection, Japan strongly supports the new proposal outlined by the U.S. on 31 May regarding the negotiation between Israel and Hamas on the hostage release and ceasefire, and strongly urges all parties concerned to seize this opportunity and steadily work toward the release of all hostages and a sustainable ceasefire.
Japan also expresses deep concern over the settler violence and settlement activities in the West Bank. Japan strongly urges the Israeli Government to fully freeze its settlement activities, which are in violation of international law and undermine the viability of a two-state solution, and once again calls for the need to refrain from actions that escalate tensions.
I thank you.
