Item 10: ID on the High Commissioner’s oral report on Ukraine
Statement by Ambassador OIKE Atsuyuki

Thank you,
We appreciate the High Commissioner’s briefing on the dire human rights situation in Ukraine.
It is over two years now since Russia began its aggression against Ukraine. Once again, Japan unequivocally condemns the actions of the Russian forces in Ukraine. Indiscriminate attacks on innocent civilians are a grave breach of international humanitarian law and completely unacceptable.
Japan expresses its utmost respect for the courage and perseverance shown by the people of Ukraine in defense of their country’s freedom and independence.
In February, Japan convened the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Growth and Reconstruction, which included a session on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). At that session, Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA emphasized the need for “reintegration” of families, communities, and the entire people of Ukraine.
While incorporating the WPS perspective into our support, Japan will continue to stand closely with the people of Ukraine both bilaterally and multilaterally until peace has been restored.
I thank you.
