The 55th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 10: ID on OHCHR report on technical assistance for South Sudan
Statement of Japan
TAKEUCHI Yasuaki, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
2 April 2024

   Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Japan appreciates OHCHR’s report and its tireless work on improving South Sudan’s human rights situation, including through technical assistance and capacity-building.

We note that South Sudan has made progress in the drafting of the bills establishing the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing and the Compensation and Reparation Authority. We also acknowledge the relevant support from the UN.

Japan highlights the importance of conducting free, fair, credible and peaceful elections as a means to improve the human rights situation in the country. While Japan acknowledges South Sudan’s achievements to date, we note that the country might face challenges.

South Sudan has demonstrated its commitment to human rights, including the right to freedom of opinion, expression, peaceful assembly, and association, by becoming the newest party to the ICCPR, and these rights should be respected leading up to the elections and beyond.

To that end, Japan will continue to cooperate with the Government of South Sudan and the rest of the international community to protect and promote human rights in South Sudan.

   I thank you.
