Item 4: ID with Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar
Statement by Ms. ASANO Yuko
19 March 2024
Japan thanks the Special Rapporteur for his briefing.
As stated in the previous session, Japan remains seriously concerned about the continuing deterioration of the human rights situation in Myanmar and deplores the lack of concrete progress over the past three years since the coup.
Japan also shares the observation made by the Special Rapporteur that Myanmar’s military is becoming an even greater threat to civilians. Japan once again strongly condemns the Myanmar military’s repeated extension of the state of emergency and its failure to seek a peaceful resolution or to respect the will of the people of Myanmar.
Japan will continue to work closely with the international community, including ASEAN, and make every effort to improve the human rights and humanitarian situation in Myanmar.
I thank you.
