Statement of Japan

Japan is concerned about the continuing conflict in Ethiopia and the serious human rights and humanitarian situation in the country.

In order to realize a permanent and peaceful resolution to the conflict, it is important that the international community assist the mediation efforts being made by African Union High Representative Obasanjo.

Japan calls for immediate and effective humanitarian access in the affected areas of Ethiopia. Considering the report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Japan also calls for those responsible for human rights violations to be held accountable.

Japan will continue to work to address this humanitarian crisis with the international community. In this regard, we are exploring the possibility of providing additional humanitarian assistance, taking into account the increased number of people in urgent need as a result of the conflict. Japan will also contribute to efforts to achieve long-term peace and stability in Ethiopia.
