Item 2: EOV on the draft resolution L.11 titled: Human Rights Situation in Yemen
by Ambassador OKANIWA Ken, Permanent Mission of Japan (7 October 2021)
Thank you.
At the outset, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the core group for tabling this draft resolution.
Japan is concerned about the deteriorating human rights and humanitarian situation in Yemen. We condemn the attacks by the Houthis in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia. We encourage all parties to this conflict to exercise utmost restraint.
Japan notes the point raised that some of the contents of the reports of the Group of Eminent Experts contain misleading expressions, which does not contribute to promotion of the peace initiatives in Yemen. We strongly expect the Group to engage in furthering the peace process in a constructive manner.
We have consistently requested the concerned parties to integrate the two resolutions on Yemen into one. We find it regrettable that a unified resolution has not been tabled at this session. Therefore, Japan will abstain from voting to encourage both sides to continue to work toward unifying their resolutions.
I thank you.
