Interactive Dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry
on the Syrian Arab Republic
Statement by Mr. KITANO Yasuo
First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Thank you, Ms. Vice President.

Japan welcomes the update by the COI and appreciates the Commission’s efforts. We deplore the ongoing dire humanitarian and human rights situation in Syria. All the perpetrators of human rights violations should be held accountable in a due process.

The humanitarian situation continues to be very severe in Syria, including Daraa al-Balad where the military confrontation is escalating recently, and ensuring humanitarian access remains of great importance. Japan calls on all parties concerned to achieve an immediate nation-wide ceasefire and to comply with international human rights and humanitarian law so as to ensure the protection of human rights of the population and the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Japan reiterates its commitment to work closely with international partners and UN Special Envoy Pedersen toward resolving the Syrian crisis in line with Security Council resolution 2254 to advance the political process facilitated by the United Nations.

I thank you, Ms. Vice President.
