令和3年7月30日
47th Session of the Human Rights Council (6 July 2021)
Interactive Dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry
on the Syrian Arab Republic
Statement by Mr. KITANO Yasuo
First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Thank you, Mr./Ms. (Vice) President.

Japan welcomes the update by the COI and appreciates the Commission’s efforts. We deplore ongoing dire humanitarian and human rights situation in Syria. All the perpetrators of human rights violations should be held accountable in a due process.

The humanitarian situation continues to be very severe in Syria and ensuring humanitarian access is still of great importance. To this end in addition to the effective cross line assistance, continuation of cross border assistance is critical, especially when making efforts to contain COVID-19 and providing equal access to the vaccination across country. Japan calls for the united efforts by the international community in extending the mandate of the cross border assistance. Japan also calls on all parties concerned to achieve an immediate nation-wide ceasefire and to comply with international humanitarian law to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Japan reiterates its commitment to work closely with international partners and UN Special Envoy Pedersen toward resolving the Syrian crisis in line with Security Council resolution 2254 through effective delivery of necessary humanitarian assistance and efforts to advance the political process facilitated by the United Nations.

I thank you, Mr./Ms. (Vice) President.
