Ambassador OKANIWA Ken
Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
21 June 2021
Thank you.
Freedom of expression and freedom of the media are important components of any democratic society. In every country, such fundamental freedoms must be ensured and oppression of human rights defenders and journalists must be prevented. Japan will express its position on specific human rights situations in the relevant sessions.
This month marks the 10th anniversary of the Human Rights Council’s endorsement of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. It is increasingly important to promote and protect human rights in business activities, including in supply chains. Japan has formulated its National Action Plan in order to enhance the promotion of human rights. We would appreciate the views of the HC on the actions that each state should take with a view to promoting respect for human rights in business activities.
The issue of abductions by DPRK is a top priority of the Japanese Government. As the families of the victims are now advanced in age, there is no time to lose in resolving this issue. Japan counts on the understanding and cooperation of the international community for the resolution of this issue.
I thank you.
