Statement of Japan
Ambassador OKANIWA Ken
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
Thank you, Madam President.
Japan has consistently supported the process of democratization in Myanmar. Japan has grave concerns over the seizure of power by the military on February 1 and the detention of the democratically elected President of the Government. This goes against the process of democratization.
Japan is also seriously concerned about the rising political tensions and strongly urges the military and other security forces to immediately halt the use of force and other violent acts against the public.
Japan also strongly urges the Myanmar military to release all those detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and immediately restore the democratic political system.
Japan strongly hopes the government democratically elected by the people of Myanmar will be swiftly reinstated. In this regard, Japan will continue to proactively and constructively engage in discussions towards the improvement of the human rights and humanitarian situation in Myanmar in close cooperation with the international community.
I thank you, Madam President.
