UPR of Nepal — Statement of Japan
Mr. MAEHIRA Tomoyoshi
First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Japan
21 January 2021

Thank you.

 Japan warmly welcomes the delegation of Nepal to this session.

 Japan highly appreciates the positive steps taken by Nepal to protect and promote the rights of women and children, including the efforts to eliminate harmful practices such as chhaupadi and the accession to Palermo Protocol.

 On the other hand, Japan is aware of challenges facing Nepal, including those related to the rights of women, children, vulnerable groups including minorities and persons affected by leprosy.

 Japan would like to make three recommendations:

  1. ensure effective access to gender-based violence response services and justice;

  1. ensure leprosy training within the healthcare community, and implement the UN Principles and Guidelines for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons Affected by Leprosy; and

  1. ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance;

We wish the delegation of Nepal every success in the review.

I thank you.
