Interactive Dialogue with Working Group on Business and Human Rights
Statement by Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
Thank you, Madam President.
Japan welcomes the report by the Working Group. The COVID-19 pandemic is a serious threat to human security. It has had profound impacts on our lives and dignity, especially for vulnerable groups. In these difficult times, it is more important than ever that the business sector respects human rights in its operations and that governments implement the UN Guiding Principles. In doing so, we must take a holistic approach that is aligned with the SDGs and leaves no one behind. For its part, Japan has been developing a National Action Plan for the implementation of the UNGP.
Governments and businesses should continue to respect the right to health and other human rights of consumers and workers, including health professionals, by taking adequate measures against COVID-19. It is also necessary to address the pandemic’s negative consequences for employment and supply chains, while keeping the economy moving. In this regard, we would like to ask the members of the Working Group what they believe Member States should prioritize to mitigate the impacts on human rights in business activities both during and after the current pandemic.
I thank you, Madam President.
