令和2年7月21日
43rd Session of the Human Rights Council (3 March 2020)
ITEM 3 Interactive Dialogue with:
Ms. Ikponwosa Ero, Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism
Statement by Mr. MAEHIRA Tomoyoshi,
Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Ms. Ero,

Japan strongly opposes all forms of discrimination, prejudice, and attacks against persons with albinism. Such acts should not be tolerated in any form or manifestation. We fully support the Independent Expert on albinism.

In a similar vein to your endeavors, Japan has taken the initiative to eliminate discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members. Both issues have in common that the issues are not really well-known worldwide. In order to eliminate discrimination, prejudice, and attacks on persons with albinism and persons affected by leprosy and their family members, we need to raise awareness to foster accurate understanding on the issues.

Could you share with us some of the lessons learned from your tireless efforts to eradicate discrimination against the persons with albinism in order that might apply them, where appropriate, to similar efforts, including the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy? Also, what would you recommend to raise awareness and join support of the public on these issues?

Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
