Item 5: Interactive Dialogue with
the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee
Statement by Ambassador Ken OKANIWA
Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
Thank you, Mr. President.
Japan appreciates the efforts by the Advisory Committee to make substantial contributions to the discussion at the Human Rights Council. We recognize the important role played by the Advisory Committee as a think tank to the Council.
As a leading sponsor of the resolution on leprosy, Japan pays special attention to the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members. In this regard, we recognize the drafting of “the Principles and Guidelines against persons affected by leprosy and their family members” as one of the Committee’s significant achievements.
Emerging challenges to human rights such as those posed by the advent of new technologies need to be addressed by the Council. Japan looks forward to the Committee’s constructive and substantial contributions, in an objective and impartial manner, to help the Council to address such emerging challenges.
Japan requests the Committee to continue engaging in open dialogue with member states and the civil society. Japan attaches great importance to the role of the Advisory Committee and will continue to cooperate with and engage in its activities.
Thank you.
