Item 3: Clustered Interactive Dialogue with the WG on Discrimination against Women and the WG on Business and Human Rights
Statement by Mr. Masashi NAKAGOME
Minister, Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
Thank you, Mr. Vice President.
Japan welcomes the report by the Working Group on Discrimination against Woman.
As the Chair of the G20, Japan puts women’s empowerment as a priority issue. We are facilitating efforts to (1) promote women’s participation in the workplace, (2) support girls’ education including STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), and (3) incorporate the opinions of women entrepreneurs and business leaders. We believe that these efforts will contribute to reducing deprivation of women’s liberty all over the world.
Japan provides assistance for quality education as well as human development with a target of reaching 4 million women around the world by 2020. We are also improving access to finance for women entrepreneurs by providing support to the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative.
In Japan, we encourage companies to develop action plans for women’s participation in the workplace and to disclose related information.
Japan will further strengthen its efforts for gender equality and women’s empowerment to realize “a society where women shine.”
Japan appreciates the report by the Working Group on Business and Human Rights and the Working Group’s practical guidance on integrating a gender perspective into the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
Lastly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Working Group for their valuable inputs to our NAP formulation process. We hope to continue our cooperation with the Working Group.
Thank you.
