ITEM 3 Clustered Interactive Dialogue with:
- Ms. Catalina D. Aguilar, Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities
- Ms. Ikponwosa Ero, Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism
Statement by Ambassador Ken OKANIWA
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Thank you, Mr. President.

Ms. Aguilar,
Japan has made efforts to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities, including concluding the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2014 and the enactment of the Act for Eliminating Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities in 2016.

The Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be used as an opportunity to foster an inclusive and sustainable society based on diversity and harmony in Japan and around the world. The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the UN have signed a Letter of Intent to promote contribution of sports to the 2030 Agenda. The Committee’s Sustainable Sourcing Code ensures that suppliers respect international human rights standards and eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities.

Ms. Aguilar, can you comment on contribution of sports in relation to persons with disabilities?

Ms. Ero,
Japan strongly opposes all forms of discrimination, prejudice, and attacks against persons with albinism. Such acts should not be tolerated in any form or manifestation. We fully support the Independent Expert on albinism.

Access to justice is one challenge highlighted in the report. Ensuring access to justice and prevention of human rights abuses are critical in tackling issues related to persons with albinism.

Ms. Ero, can you elaborate further on the aspect of prevention of infringement of rights of persons with albinism?

Thank you, Mr. President.
