Seventy-Ninth (28th Extraordinary) Session
Statement by Ambassador OKANIWA Ken,
Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
3 December 2020
Thank you, Madam Chair.
At the outset, the Delegation of Japan would like to express its appreciation to the Chair for all of the hard work performed to make this session of the Coordination Committee a success. Japan would also like to commend the Secretariat for its efforts in arranging this meeting under the difficult circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As stated by the Delegation of the United Kingdom on behalf of Group B, Japan supports the slate proposed by the Director General.
Japan strongly expects the new senior management team (SMT) to continue to ensure transparency, impartiality and accountability in the management of WIPO. Japan also wishes the new SMT to address the global issues including responses to COVID-19, to establish IP system for new emerging technologies, to enhance convenience for users, and to reinforce IP infrastructure through capacity building and the development of IP systems. With those expectations in mind, Japan will continue to support the initiatives of WIPO under DG Tang and his new team. Japan looks forward to working closely with them to bring in a new era of Intellectual Property. With increased importance of digital technologies and intangible assets, Japan would like to reiterate its commitment to support strengthening the role of WIPO Secretariat and SMT, in particular.
Japan would like to take this opportunity to express its appreciation to outgoing senior officials for their outstanding contributions to this Organization. Japan wishes them all the best and every success in their future endeavors.
Thank you, Madam Chair.
