Japan welcomes the steady progress made by Bangladesh under the road map and commends the recent ratification of several ILO conventions, making Bangladesh the first country in Asia to ratify all the fundamental conventions.
This is a significant achievement, demonstrating Bangladesh’s commitment to upholding international labour standards.
We also note with satisfaction that the recent general election was conducted in a credible and largely peaceful manner.
Under the new leadership, Japan strongly hopes to see continued advancement in labour reforms.

In February, Japan and Bangladesh signed a historical Economic Partnership Agreement, which includes a stand-alone labor chapter.
Upon its entry into force, both countries will endeavor to ensure that their domestic laws provide high levels of worker protection, consistent with the ILO conventions to which they are party.

Building on the ILO framework and this partnership, Japan believes that Bangladesh will continue to make every effort to safeguard workers’ rights. We encourage the Government to listen carefully to trade unions, respond sincerely to any further inquiries from the ILO, and steadily advance reforms.
We remain confident that this important agenda can be brought to a timely conclusion.
Japan stands ready to work constructively with Bangladesh, the ILO Office, and the tripartite constituents to support ongoing progress.
I thank you.
