Statement of Japan
Ambassador HONSEI Kozo
Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
20 September 2022
Thank you.
Japan appreciates the work undertaken by the Special Rapporteur, Dr. Marcos ORELLANA for presenting these reports.
With regard to the accident involving oil leakage from the Japanese chartered vessel “Wakashio”, the Government of Japan has been providing its full cooperation, in response to the request by the Government of the Republic of Mauritius.
We have dispatched the Japan Disaster Relief Expert Teams and study teams from the JICA in order to undertake survey missions involving the field-based assessment on the environmental impacts of the accident and the provision of technical assistance and equipment for the Government of Mauritius. We have also engaged in dialogue, in a constructive manner, with the Government of Mauritius and the Special Rapporteur.
Japan continues to work closely with Mauritius and other relevant stakeholders including private-sector entities, so that the environment around the area affected by the accident can be recovered as soon as possible.
Regarding the report on the use of mercury in small-scale gold mining, as a country that has experienced the hardships of mercury pollution and Minamata disease, Japan continues to actively take part in and lead the relevant discussions around the Minamata Convention.
I thank you.
