Seventh Session of the Human Rights Counsil : Resolution on the Situations of human rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Statement by Ambassador Ichiro FUJISAKI
Resolution on the situation of human rights in the DPRK

Geneva, 27 March 2008
Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Japan has decided to co-table this resolution, together with the EU. I thank you very much for all the efforts Slovenia has done on behalf of EU. The human rights situation in the DPRK remains serious enough to be followed by the international community.

Thus, last December, the UNGA requested the Special Rapporteur to report his findings and recommendation to the next session of the General Assembly.

We highly appreciate the Special Rapporteur’s sincere efforts and we would like to see his mission continued, including his report to the Human Rights Council.

This is not the resolution to specify a country and denounce it. This is the procedural resolution to extend the mandate of Special Rapporteur in order to follow and improve the human rights situation.

We hope this mandate will be extended by consensus.
