UPR of Georgia
Statement by Mr. SHIOTA Takahiro, Minister-Counsellor
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
26 January 2026

 Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Japan warmly welcomes the delegation of Georgia to this session.

Japan appreciates the efforts by Georgia to combat violence against women and domestic violence, including the adoption of a related action plan. Japan also commends Georgia’s efforts to promote deinstitutionalization of persons with disabilities through developing a dedicated strategy and action plan.

Japan has been closely monitoring the developments in Georgia following the parliamentary election held in October 2024. In this context, concerns about infringements on the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including of the media, in the country have been growing. With a view to a meaningful dialogue, Japan recommends that Georgia take constructive measures to gain the understanding of its people.

We wish the delegation of Georgia every success in the review.

   I thank you.
