2026/1/26
UPR of the Republic of Austria
Statement by Mr. SHIOTA Takahiro, Minister-Counsellor
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
23 January 2026

 Thank you, Madam Vice-President.

Japan warmly welcomes the delegation of Austria to this session.

Japan highly appreciates the positive steps taken by Austria to ensure women’s rights, particularly the significant increase in its budget for women and gender equality, including for prevention of violence against women. We also commend the measures taken by the government to promote the cultural identity and diversity of national minorities in the country.

Japan would like to make two recommendations:

  1. take measures to promote the rights of persons with disabilities, including establishing a comprehensive deinstitutionalization strategy; and
  2. strengthen efforts to combat prejudice, racism, discrimination and xenophobia, including through the adoption of a national action plan against racism.

We wish the delegation of Austria every success in the review.

    I thank you.
