The 51st Session of the UPR Working Group, Review of Nepal, Statement by Ms. ASANO Yuko (21 January 2026)

2026/1/22
UPR of Nepal
Statement by Ms. ASANO Yuko, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
21 January 2026

 Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

 Japan warmly welcomes the delegation of Nepal to this session.

 Japan commends the positive steps taken by Nepal since the previous review cycle, including the 2024 amendment bill aimed at ensuring accountability for serious human rights violations committed during the civil war.

 In a spirit of constructive dialogue, Japan has three recommendations:

 1. make further efforts to combat trafficking in persons and protect victims;

 2. ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance; and

 3. steadily implement the United Nations principles and guidelines for the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members.

 We wish the delegation of Nepal every success in this review.

 I thank you.
