Item 4: Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the
situation of human rights in the Russian Federation
Statement by Mr. SUZUKI Junsuke, First Secretary
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
22 September 2025
Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
Madam Special Rapporteur, we express our appreciation to you for today’s briefing.
We remain concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in the Russian Federation. We also, again, express our concern that civic space continues to shrink in the Russian Federation.
We reiterate our previous calls on the Russian authorities to comply with all of Russia’s obligations under international human rights law, including the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and to respect these rights, including the right to freedom of expression and the right of peaceful assembly.
We believe that universal values, such as human rights, freedom, democracy, and the rule of law should be respected in every country regardless of culture, traditions, or political or economic systems, and that the promotion and protection of human rights is the basic responsibility of all countries.
I thank you.
