Thank you, Mr. President.
We would like to thank the Commission of Inquiry for its important work and for its oral update on the human rights situation in Ukraine.
We remain deeply concerned over the humanitarian and human rights situation in Ukraine. More than three and a half years have passed since the start of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which, we reiterate, is a clear violation of international law and shakes the very foundation of the international order.
We once again condemn in the strongest terms the actions of the Russian forces, which have led to a large number of civilian casualties in Ukraine.
We appreciate the investigation being conducted by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Ukraine. The work of the COI is important in identifying those responsible for violations or abuses of human rights and holding them accountable. Japan fully supports the work of the COI and its mandate.
We also express our respect for the Ukrainian people, who have demonstrated immense bravery in standing up against Russia’s aggression day after day. Japan will continue to stand firmly with Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved in Ukraine.
